Radio frequency is a fairly old technology; however, its application to logistics and materials handling is relatively new, one reason has been the high cost of tags. However, the growing use of identification by radio frequency, RFID, has gone through economies of scale, making these more accessible and, consequently, to the final consumer, it has proved attractive in certain applications.
Still, costs are comparatively high compared to the traditional bar code; so its use currently is more advisable in pieces of a relatively high cost. This does not inhibit to have applications where, despite its higher cost is more advisable that the bar code, given the intrinsic advantages of RFID, for example, can read many items at once, which is not possible with a conventional bar code. Also allows reading distances, it can be re-writable, allows independent reading of the position of the label, qualities not attributable to the traditional bar code; in warehouses of certain features, you can make almost instantaneous inventories of thousands of SKU's, addressing the reading pistols correctly. So RFID, provides services and benefits that cannot be derived with bar codes.
Industrial applications have appeared more at a pallet level and box, but curiously at the item level, particularly on expensive items to the final consumer (e.g., clothing, jewelry, sunglasses, shoes) is very common to see RFID tags with substantially improved diligence, accuracy, speed and visibility of countless stores of customer service.
